AABC and Symposia provide a unique forum where the directions of automotive power system technology are revealed by some of its most influential players.

The Advanced Automotive Battery Conference and Symposia provide a unique forum where the direction of the automotive battery technology and market is revealed by some of its most influential players.

With the introduction of advanced electric and hybrid vehicles, the automotive industry began exploring cost-effective ways to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.  Energy-storage technology is the key to the successful implementation of advanced vehicles. For one decade, the annual International Advanced Automotive Battery Conference (AABC) has attracted industry professionals from the hybrid and electric vehicle world and their battery system suppliers, to stimulate the sharing of experiences and opinions.

This international forum offers attendees valuable insights into the emerging industry of advanced vehicles and advanced batteries, including lithium-ion battery and EC capacitor technologies. Participants range from the leading vehicle developers, automotive systems and battery materials and manufacturing equipment suppliers, to government officials and academics. Renowned as a global meeting place, AABC continues to ask, explore and answer the questions most relevant to the design and development of advanced vehicles and the batteries that will power them.

To keep pace with the rapidly expanding market development of HEVs, EVs, and their batteries, AABC hosted two highly successful conferences in 2010. The 10th International Advanced Automotive Battery and EC Capacitor Conference was held in the Orlando, Florida, and the first European Advanced Automotive Batteries Conference in Mainz, Germany.  If you were unable to attend, you can now order copies of the AABC-10 Conference and Symposia Proceedings and the AABC-10 Europe Conference and Symposium Proceedings.

Makoto Nakashima and Takehito Yoda of Toyota presented details regarding the

PHEV Prius and its air cooled lithium-ion battery pack.

Dr. Henry Mao, BAK, shared his knowledge of the automotive battery industry in China

and gave details of BAK’s battery systems.

Roland Matthe described the lithium-ion battery system that is being implemented in

the GM’s Volt/Ampera PHEV.

Robert Spotnitz, Battery Design, led discussions focused on design trade-offs for

lithium-ion batteries.

Professor Martin Winters reviewed the latest developments in Li-ion battery materials.

Marc Verbrugge, GM, leads discussion on next generation lithium/air batteries.

Kevin Beaty, Eaton, and Dan Youngs, Allison Transmission, shared some of their

experience of using Li-Ion and NiMH in hybrid delivery vehicles and buses.

Eric Darcy described how NASA qualifies commercial off-the-shelf lithium-ion cells for

space missions and identifies potentially bad cells.

Dr. Anderman’s forecast for the automotive lithium-ion batteries raised a gasp from the

general audience but nods of agreement from many industry experts.

Joe LoGrasso, GM, and Ted Miller, Ford, provided perspective from automakers on

battery design for maximum reliability.

Ken Damon, Leyden Energy, leads a discussion on the manufacturing of lithium-ion

batteries.

John Miller, ECCAP Chairman, and presenters Sunwook Kim and Michael Liedtke,

field questions during the EC Capacitor panel discussion.

Youngjoon Shin, LG Chem, explained the advantages of pouch cell design.

Networking receptions provided a global marketing venue for AABC-10 exhibitors and

participants.

Menahem Anderman greets Kazuo Tojima, Toyota, and Jun Furukawa, Furukawa Battery

Co., at the Delegates’ Dinner attended by over 700 participants.

Mario Schweiger of AVL List GmbH, one of 25 poster presenters, discusses real traction

batteries on the virtual proving ground.
