June 6 - 10, 2011 - Rheingoldhalle Congress Centrum, Mainz, Germany

Nearly 700 attendees from 30 countries and 400 companies participated in AABC Europe 2011, from June 6 – 10, in Mainz, Germany. Top battery technologists from the leading European automakers presented updated material regarding the European advanced-vehicle programs and battery requirements, including Audi, BMW, Daimler, Ford, GM-Opel, Porsche and Volkswagen. Stimulating discussion followed the presentations on the status and prospects of advanced batteries in relation to the needs of the European market.

Networking events, which included 60 exhibitors, provided a lively environment for information exchange and business opportunities outside the conference sessions. Mainz offered perfect weather with long hours of sunlight, and many scheduled business dinners in the outdoor dining venues near the Rhine River. Marie-France Piton of Erachem Cornilog S.A. summed up the networking opportunites, "You can meet almost anyone you'll ever want to meet in advanced automotive batteries at AABC Europe!"
Christian Mohrdieck, shown with Menahem Anderman, reviewed infrastructure for EVs. Eckhard Karden concluded that micro-hybrids are part of all carmakers' European CO2 roadmaps and will soon get high market share. Patrice Simon examined the challenges ahead for supercapacitors. Tom Van Bellinghen explored current and future price trends and market shares of different cathode materials, including projections for 2020. Four international consultants - Menahem Anderman, Wolfgang Bernhart, T. Kazama, and Christophe Pillot, discussed the growth prospects of hybrid and electrical vehicles during AABTAM's opening session. Eytan Benhamou and Arno Kwade responded to questions regarding the coating and drying technologies. Mark Mathias explored the pace setting issues in automotive fuel cell commercialization. Peter Lamp chaired Session 4 of AABTAM, covering battery technology for EVs and PHEVs. Yurii Maletin pointed out that lower inner resistance is the key advantage of UC devices in automotive applications. Ken Broom presented a highly informative tutorial on commercial cell manufacturing. Patricia Smith presented an evaluation of the performance strengths, limitations and future directions of lithium ion capacitors. Exhibits fostered quality networking opportunities for both attendees and exhibitors. Conference participants reviewed the poster displays and discussed the content with the presenters.
