HEL manufacture instruments for thermal hazard and calorimetry testing, including an adiabatic calorimeter (often generically called "ARC") for thermal runaway problems in batteries and battery packs. This instrument is widely used to determine limits on safe temperature as well as safe charging/discharging rates. The product – Battery Testing Calorimeter (BTC) – can be used for packs larger than 50cm (around 20 inches) as standard now while at the same time enabling small scale tests of battery components during research and development phases. This data under so-called "abuse" conditions is now almost mandatory.
BTC can be linked with live video and thermal imaging technology, to provide unparalleled data on battery performance and hazards.
An isothermal version (iso-BTC) has now also been released which directly provides data for thermal management systems. For example under different charging/discharging rates, it will determine how much cooling is necessary to prevent runaway. The iso-BTC is suitable for single batteries and packs, regardless of size and shape.
